Fueling Northern & Regional economic prosperity

Fueling Northern & Regional economic prosperity

Alberta’s government is investing in projects that fuel even more economic development and diversification across the province.

Municipalities, Indigenous communities, and non-profit organizations across Alberta can now apply for funding for projects promoting regional economic growth and diversification.

The Alberta Government has announced the Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) program. The program commits up to $2 million to go towards the delivery of business supports, attraction and retention of workers, as well as enhance the tourism industry and build capacity for economic growth.

“Communities across Alberta have unique needs and priorities,” said Minister of Jobs, Economy and Norther Development Brian Jean.

“All Albertans deserve to benefit from the renewed Alberta Advantage, so our government is supporting projects that help create jobs, attract investment and fuel opportunities and economic prosperity across our province.”

Eligible projects could include those that centre on supporting new resources within a municipality or organization revitalizing central business distraicts, or developing strategies to address local labour force gaps and improving internet connectivity in commercial areas.

“Supporting Alberta business starts from the ground up. The Northern and Regional Economic Development program will give community members the chance to invest in projects that help bring in jobs while fueling growth in their local economy,” said MLA Martin Long, parliamentary secretary for small business.

Approved applicants could receive between $20,000 and $200,000 per project. NRED will provide up to 50 per cent of total eligible project costs. Indigenous applicants could receive up to 75 per cent of total eligible project costs. There is a dedicated funding stream for northern projects/those led by Indigenous communities to support their unique economic challenges.

The application deadline is Jan. 22, 2023.

Happy Chanukah to Red Deer’s Jewish Community

Happy Chanukah to Red Deer’s Jewish Community

Wishing the Jewish community of Red Deer-North a very Happy Chanukah!

On Sunday, Dec. 18, the eight-day Jewish “Festival of Lights” will begin, lasting until the evening of Monday, Dec. 26.

Every year, Jewish people all over the world will gather with their families to light the menorah each night, sing, eat potato latkes and exchange gifts – all in celebration of the oil that lasted for eight days in the temple.

The Festival of Lights reminds us anyone can light up the world with good deeds and make it a brighter, hopeful, and more righteous place.

May you have a meaningful celebration and may the light of the candles represent brighter times ahead.

Bill 205 aims to make rodeo Alberta’s official sport

Bill 205 aims to make rodeo Alberta’s official sport

Bill 205, the Official Sport of Alberta Act, has been tabled in the Alberta Legislature.

If passed, the Act would make rodeo the official sport in the province.

“Rodeo is near and dear to the hearts of Albertans. It brings families and communities together, and it celebrates our western heritage,” said Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely. “Rodeo also welcomes newcomers with open arms, is a major attraction for tourists, and is low-cost fun for people of all ages.”

This holds true for many living in Red Deer. The Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) held annually at Westerner Park sees 43,000 attendees, and has an economic impact of $37 million. The Calgary Stampede attracts people from around the world and has an economic impact of $282.5 million. The Ponoka Stampede – just 40 minutes north of Red Deer – attracts 100,000 people and has an economic impact of $10 million.

The bill has to pass three readings and receive royal assent before it will become law.
